The Story Behind Our Impossible Name

"CrashMurderBusiness? Really? That's the name of the place?"

You bet! And by now, if you've spent any time with us, you probably get that our space is all about collectivity and camaraderie. But CrashMurderBusiness?!? We know—yikes!

Fear not, fellow coffee adventurer. While our name might produce a few goosebumps for the uninitiated, it's actually a celebration of the community spirit that defines everything we do here on Montezuma Avenue.

The Magic of Collective Nouns

Here's the delightful truth: A crash of rhinos. A murder of crows. A business of ferrets. These are the collective names for each animal gracing our logo, and they're exactly as wonderful as they sound.

You've probably heard of a pack of wolves, and here in New Mexico, you might stumble across a band of coyotes on an early morning hike. But how many other collective nouns do you know? A parliament of owls? A loveliness of ladybugs? (Sound familiar from our menu?)

Animals seem to understand something worth remembering—we might be grouped by our sameness, but the real magic happens when we gather together. Of course, right up until the pride of lions decides to snack on the zeal of zebras, but that's a story for another day and a decidedly different kind of shop.

The Origin Story: Where Magic Meets Serendipity

This wonderful shop was the conjuring of our friend, Ranier, who remains our resident dreamer and conceiver of potions. With Alice-in-Wonderland creativity and a sorceress' fascination for new and exciting tastes and magical elixirs, Ranier brought CrashMurderBusiness to life in 2021.

Meanwhile, across the ocean in France, Elizabeth and Andrew were bringing an extended expatriation to a close, bidding au revoir (not adieu) to the City of Lights. With no fixed destination and no particular plan, they had no idea that the City Different in the Land of Enchantment would choose them, following a star-aligned encounter between Liz and Ranier.

And enchanted we were!

What began as a light conversation about coffee ended as a bond over building community through creatively crafted concoctions—a dream Elizabeth had carried for thirty years, ever since she almost opened a coffee shop lending library in Fire Island, New York.

Come and Explore

So yes, our name might make you do a double-take the first time you see it. But like the best discoveries in Santa Fe, the story behind it is worth the curiosity it sparks. We're here to prove that sometimes the most unexpected combinations—whether in collective nouns or coffee ingredients—create the most memorable experiences.
